How IPL works
IPL also known as Photo Rejuvination refers to a variety of treatments simultaneously addressing different types of lesions. IPL, like lasers, are used to deliver heat and light at a specific wavelength into the skin in order to target certain colors. Pulsed Light combined with Radio Frequency delivers precise amounts of energy to the skin in one pulse. The target (brown spot, etc.) absorbs the light energy, heating it while Radio Frequency further elevates the temperature of the target to a level required for destruction. The lymph fluid carries the damaged cells and destroyed bacteria, then the body passes them out with other body waste.
Experience
After cleansing and exfoliating, eye protection and ultrasound gel is applied. The gel as well as the cooling head of the device help to keep the surface skin cool while sending the heat deeper into the skin. The sensation is described as a snapping like a rubber band or like a prick. This part of the treatment goes fairly fast so it’s only about 10-15 minutes of discomfort. Skin is then cleaned and if needed additional cooling is done. While the tissue is stimulated, high quality serums and products absorb well.
IPL pulses are delivered quickly and basically shatter and break-up the spot. Darker spots closer to the surface may visibly break up and slough off (coffee grounding) while other lesions are broken up and begin to fade as the lymphatic system works to rid the unwanted cells.
Telangiectasias are small, dilated capillaries and slightly larger blood vessels which are visible because they are near the surface of the skin. IPL treats them by causing damage to the vessel and forcing it to collapse leaving blood flow deeper where it is needed. More prominent lesions around the nostrils and cheeks usually need additional treatments. Depending on the underlying cause, more could appear. However, if left untreated, these vessels will continue to dilate and become more noticeable.
Redness, visible blood vessels and small, red, puss-filled bumps can all be treated with IPL as it targets the red color to alleviate the inflammation, redness, pimples and uneven skin tones caused by the condition. IPL pulses cause the tiny capillaries to collapse while killing bacteria.
IPL treatments dry up acne by killing the bacteria deep in the skin and reducing the redness and inflammation. It targets the pigmentation around active acne as well post-trauma pigmentation such as acne scarring. The added benefit of RF helps to rebuild collagen thus softening the scarring. IPL treatments can even treat cystic acne. Regular acne treatments and topicals can’t reach the fluid-filled cysts embedded deep into the skin. IPL penetrates the skin tissue getting directly to the infection and inflammation.
IPL is able to target and treat multiple colors and conditions while also removing blotchy dull discoloration. Radio Frequency stimulates collagen and helps to smooth fines lines. This combination delivers a clearer, smoother complexion.
Results
After your treatment, skin may be pink and warm. Brown spots and capillaries may look darker immediately after treatment as your body works to rid the unwanted cells and the discoloration begins to fade. The bigger the contrast between skin color and the color of the target, the more effective the treatment will be.
Most clients are fine with sunscreen and even makeup if needed to go about their day. Treatments can be performed 3-4 weeks apart and results will continue to improve for several weeks. Depending on your goals, a series of treatments may be needed.
Advantages
Unlike lasers, an IPL device can send out more than one wavelength of pulsating light so it can treat a range of skin conditions at the same time. Because the light doesn’t hurt other tissue, it is a safer treatment than traditional lasers.
IPL is a faster way of targeting dyspigmentation than topical solutions.
Some skin conditions such as broken capillaries don’t have an over-the-counter product for treatment which makes IPL an ideal option. Also, some treatments such as Sclerotherapy are not recommended for small broken capillaries on the face.
IPL is also ideal for moderate to severe acne as typical acne treatments aren’t able to touch deeper, cystic acne.
